A swimming pool cleaner is a great investment that will save
you both time and money in the long run and let you enjoy
your pool longer and without the hassles or effort of
manually cleaning the pool. Pool cleaners continually clean
your pool throughout the day and are quite effective. There
are several types of cleaners, however, that have gained
widespread use and acceptance by pool owners as well as
commercial interests. These are:
Suction Side Cleaners
These cleaners are dependant on suction to move and
vacuum dirt from your pool floor. Usually they are attached
to an inlet, such as the skimmer. All the dirt is collected
through the swimming pool filter. This creates more water to
pass through your filter so an overall better filtration if
you have a decent pump and a large filter. If you live in an area
where large amounts of leafs and other debris are not your
main concern than a suction side pool cleaner may be way to
go.

Advantages: The cleaners acts as a moving main drain
sucking debris as well as it sucks water. This may cause it
to turn more water over in a relatively short amount of
time. These filters acts as a scrubbing agent when they move
around the pool cutting down on your need to brush the pool
floor and walls. Another advantage is that since they do not
require additional pumps they may be a more economical
option. Many perform more than satisfactorily for the
majority of pool owners. These are often more economic
choices than the other pool cleaning options.
Disadvantages: These cleaners pull all the large
debris like leaves to your filter. A lot of their
performance rely on the strength of your filter and pump.
This also involves cleaning your filter much more than if
you used another type of cleaner as a dirty filter will
render your cleaner inefficient. It is highly recommended to
get a leaf catcher so that large leafs or other similar
debris does not even get a chance to enter your filter. If
your filter or pump is not very effective then this option
is not correct for you.
Pressure Side Cleaners
Automatic pressure side cleaners work off water pressure
from a pump. It can be the main pump that you use for your
swimming pool or from a dedicated pressure pump known as a
booster pump. The pressure produces power for
the cleaners to move around and collect dirt into their a
separate collector or bag.

Advantages: The most significant advantage of a
pressure cleaner is that they have their own bag for leaves
and twigs and other such debris and so the filter is free to
perform its own filtration without an undue need to be
cleaned more often. Pressure side cleaners can also provide
more powerful cleaning if a booster pump is utilized. If
your pool is around a lot of trees or you feel there is a
significant need to clean large debris off the pool more
often than a pressure side cleaner is the way to go.
Disadvantages: Pressure side pool cleaners may not be
able to filter out smaller particles through their bags but
if you have a decent filter it may compensate. They do not
seem to be able to perform the scrubbing action as well as
the suction side cleaners and so they do not perform as well
on the walls of the pools.
Robotic Automatic Pool Cleaners
Automatic robotic pool cleaners are all-in-one units
driven by their own motors inside the case. It will clean
and move on its own usually straight to its own bag by a
separate pump inside the cleaner itself. Many units have on
board diagnosis system to be able to report problems with
the unit. Many units also have programmable circuitry that
allows the user to maneuver the filter in any way. Many
units will also "learn" the shape of the pool and will
accommodate its movements to clean the pool more
efficiently.

Advantages: Robotic automatic cleaners are very
effective when it comes to small debris like sand or silt as
well as being good overall cleaning of leaves and twigs.
They not only scrub your wall, but also clean the tile line
and many will also clean the steps of a swimming pool. Their
powerful pump is a great way to supplement the circulation
of your poll water. These can be a great investment for the
right kind of pool.
Disadvantages: Robotic pool cleaners are expensive
and are not usually necessary for every pool application and
may have to be removed from the pool after each use. Apart
from these robotic pool cleaners are extremely efficient
cleaners.
