The importance of a properly functioning swimming pool
filtration system cannot be overstated. Clear water not only

There are three major types of filters:
Sand
Filters - The most commonly used method where sand is
used as a filtration media. Backwashing is necessary every
few weeks. In terms of particle size filtered out, sand is
the least effective method.
Cartridge
Filters - Water passes through a cartridge of filter
material capturing debris. Needs to be cleaned only one or
twice per season. In terms of particle size filtered out
cartridge is considered to be somewhere between sand and D.E
filters.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) Filter - Tiny diatoms usually
made up of fossilized exoskeletons or man made materials are
used for filtration medium. Need backwashing but can filter
out elements as small as 5 microns and so provides the
cleanest water.
